The disturbing reality is that sexual exploitation and trafficking is occurring in every county of our state and in every suburb of the Twin Cities metro area. Research shows that the average age of recruitment is between 11-14 years old. The Minnesota Department of Health added a new question to the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey, administered in grade schools throughout the state. The results suggest an estimated 5,000 youth had traded sex or sexual photos in order to receive money, food, drugs, alcohol, a place to stay or something of value, with boys and girls almost evenly impacted. Strong parent (both mother and father) engagement is related to a broad array of positive outcomes, from dramatic reductions in abortion rates to substantial improvements in the physical, emotional, social and behavioral well being of children and families. Today, more than half of all births to American women under 30 occur outside of marriage, and the out of wedlock birth rate in the United States has passed 40%. The effects of the diminution of fatherhood and the deterioration of the family are increasingly visible in our communities. The Justice Funds provides direction for investing in the work of local leaders working to preserve life, and engage and equip expectant and existing mothers and fathers.
